Song Meaning: Disposable Heroes by Metallica
"Disposable Heroes" from Metallica's Master of Puppets

"Disposable Heroes" is immovable from my Android playlist, because the song is that good! It don't quite know why it's not a permanent fixture on their setlist. Maybe because Lars is the one who puts the setlist together, and no one really can't put a finger the shit that he does lol. Some Metallica fans think its because the song has repetitive parts, thus counterproductive to the live-vibe that the band it trying to create.

Song Analysis:

Song is about a soldier who was lied to by the Bush Administration, and reluctantly got him to join the army. OK, definitely not by Bush, but it's indicative of the countless wars that the US has involved in. There's even a war called the Banada War - I kid you not. So, the idea of the song is the deliver to the reality and harshness of warfare from the point of a view of an obedient foot solider. The authority figure in this song, the US Government, is completely blind to the value of human lives - both of their soldiers and enemy. In that regard "Disposable Heroes" resembles the lyrical meaning of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." For simplicity, let's assume the solder's  name to be Axl. So Axl was born to a poor family. After growing up, joining the US army was the only viable means of making a living.

Axl was sent abroad to do battle, and he found the battlefield to be a living hell. It's a killing field, filled with dead and broken bodies, there's barking machine gun fire, and agony of losing his best friend.

I'd like to know what you guys think of this song, and especially Lars' drumming of "Disposable Heroes." Do you think it's good, because I think his drumming on this is excellent!!! #NoKidding

Lyrics:

Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
Running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all
Victim of what said should be
A servant `til I fall

Soldier boy, made of clay
Now an empty shell
Twenty one, only son
But he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
Just do as we say
Finished here, Greeting Death
He's yours to take away

Back to the front
You will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
You will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
You coward
You servant
You blindman

Barking of machinegun fire, does nothing to me now
Sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
More a man, more stripes you wear, glory seeker trends
Bodies fill the fields I see
The slaughter never ends

Soldier boy, made of clay
Now an empty shell
Twenty one, only son
But he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
Just do as we say
Finished here, Greeting Death
He's yours to take away

Back to the front
You will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
You will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
You coward
You servant
You blindman

Why, Am I dying?
Kill, have no fear
Lie, live off lying
Hell, Hell is here

I was born for dying

Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
Had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
Left to die with only friend
Alone I clench my gun

Soldier boy, made of clay
Now an empty shell
Twenty one, only son
But he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
Just do as we say
Finished here, Greeting Death
He's yours to take away

Back to the front
You will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
You will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
You coward
You servant
You blindman

Back to the front.
